The Ultimate Guide to Finding a New Vet

The Ultimate Guide to Finding a New Vet.

First: Do some soul searching and find out what you like. (You as the pet parent)

  • Large clinic vs small clinic?
  • Many doctors vs one doctor?
  • Digital vs paper?
  • Online presents?
  • Young or older doctor?

Once you have an idea of what you want…

Do some research and keep a pros and cons list.

Don’t be afraid to give multiple clinics “a try” before you settle down
Some clinics offer free exams, this allows you to get a feel for the lay of the clinic.
There is also some clinic that allow you to tour-give them a call and check things out without your pup with you!

  1. Medium size clinic: we want to know everyone there but also be able to get an apartment when we need one. (small clinics don’t always have openings, and large clinics you can go five times in one month and 5 different vets)
  2. Looking for a digital upscale clinic: we want a clinic that uses new technology, that the veterinarians are always looking to learn more and not afraid to reach out and ask for opinions from other advising veterinarians. (older vets are great, but sometimes stuck in their way and believe that if it worked 20 years ago it will again, we want a vet that is willing to look at new things and find the best solution for the problem.)
  3. Social Media YES! we want a clinic that is very into social media, they post pictures of clients and are always sharing information online, they have records available online, if they have a mobile app the better! If we can schedule appointments online EVEN better.
  4. Events and Client Seminars: we want a clinic that is community driven and holds events, and also has teaching seminars for clients-like nutrition info, dog park knowledge etc. A clinic that lets the clients feel like they are family and that they are not only being taken care of but also collecting more knowledge about their beloved pets.
  5. Staff that are Friendly and Knowledgeable
  6. A Veterinarian that teaches you but doesn’t talk down to you
  7. Cost effect

What things are you looking for in a veterinarian? You may already have an awesome veterinarian, tell us what you love about them?

The Kennel That is Saving Lives

This KENNEL is saving lives!!!!

Okay maybe just our lives, but this kennel has saved us from many nights of hell.  Here we are just past Fourth of July and Gunner Kennel is one of the best buys we have EVER bought.

How we heard about it?   We walked into a new pet store in town called Hollywood Feed and saw a floor model of the kennel.  Jason’s first words were-“I bet koda couldn’t break out of that”  We decided to research it a bit before we made such a big purchase.

What research taught us? This kennel is made for travel and built for peace of mind.  The crate has a double wall and has been tested to withstand over 4,000lbs of force, a 12-gauge shotgun, and a 200+ foot cliff drop.  It has a certification from the Center for Pet Safety 5′ Star Crash Test Rating.

WHY WE LOVE it: Koda goes in without hesitation.  She seems to actually enjoy it, and doesn’t whine and bark.  Being made of hard plastic allows it vertically indestructible.  She can’t hurt herself or anyone or anything else!

Got a dog that likes to get out of kennels?
Got a dog that is scared of loud noises?
Need a dog crate?

Day 1 for theOKdogs in STL

Day 1 wasn’t very eventful really.

Needed a snack…apartment hunting make me hungry

A post shared by Ossian & Koda (@theokdogs) on

We went to tons of apartments, but we never got out of the car, idk why mom and dad thought it was okay to look at these new homes without us!!!  But I hear there was only one that they liked.

Tomorrow its suppose to be more time in the car looking at apartments please let it be a little cooler so we can check out some dog parks.

We did try and check out one dog park: called Dogport on Old McKelvey Rd, in Maryland Heights, MO 63043, but its a membership only park (We like those) but we don’t think we should get a membership until we know where we’ll live.  From the looks of it Dogport Dog Park isn’t a grand dog park either, so we’ll prolly pass.
